Pennsylvania State University

Penn State, founded in 1855 as an agricultural college, admitted its first class in 1859. The Pennsylvania legislature designated Penn State as the Commonwealth?s sole land-grant institution in 1863, which eventually broadened the University?s mission to include teaching, research, and public service in many academic disciplines. Penn State has awarded more than a half-million degrees, and has been Pennsylvania?s largest source of baccalaureate degrees at least since the 1930s. Although the University is privately chartered by the Commonwealth, it was from the outset considered an ?instrumentality of the state,? that is, it carries out many of the functions of a public institution and promotes the general welfare of the citizenry.

Purdue University

Educational access is the founding premise for Purdue University. Established in 1869 under the Morrill Act of 1862, the University is a land-grant, state-assisted institution with its main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. Named for its benefactor John Purdue, the University has gained a global reputation for quality, affordable education and as one of the nationâ??s leading research institutions.

Consistently ranked among the elite â?? nationally and world-wide â?? in programs such as science, agriculture, engineering, and business, Purdueâ??s educational repertoire now includes more than 500 undergraduate majors and specializations and 70 graduate programs while serving nearly 72,000 students system-wide. Purdueâ??s main campus is comprised of 12 schools and colleges -- Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, Management, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Science, Technology, and Veterinary Medicine, as well as a Graduate School that oversees all graduate programs.

University of Washington

Founded 4 November 1861, the University of Washington is one of the oldest state-supported institutions of higher education on the Pacific coast. The University is comprised of three campuses: the Seattle campus is made up of seventeen schools and colleges whose faculty offer educational opportunities to students ranging from first-year undergraduates through doctoral-level candidates; the Bothell and Tacoma campuses, each developing a distinctive identity and undergoing rapid growth, offer diverse programs to upper-division undergraduates and to graduate students.

New York University

One hundred and seventy years ago, Albert Gallatin, the distinguished statesman who served as secretary of the treasury under President Thomas Jefferson, declared his intention to establish ?in this immense and fast-growing city ? a system of rational and practical education fitting for all and graciously open to all.?

At that time, 1831, most students in American colleges and universities were members of the privileged classes. Albert Gallatin and the University?s founding fathers planned NYU as a center of higher learning that would be open to all, regardless of national origin, religious beliefs, or social background.

Duke University

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then-named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892. In December 1924, the provisions of James B. Duke's indenture created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.

Arizona State University

Arizona State University is one of the premier metropolitan public research universities in the nation.
